By Iowa Eddie This hat is great, if not a little pricey. If for some reason you've been rendered incapable of understanding how a hat works, this one comes with an owner's manual.
Tilley hats really are "The Finest in All the World"May 11, 2012
By DQ I've written less than a handful of online reviews, but I feel strongly about this hat and company, so I'm taking the time to write one. I bought my first Tilley hat 9 years ago at an outdoor recreation store. I asked the store clerk to show me a hat with the widest brim the store carried, and he introduced me to the model T2 Tilly hat and another hat with a slightly smaller brim. I spent the next 45 minutes standing there with a hat in each hand debating whether I should buy the more expensive Tilley hat with the wider brim and the warranty or if I should go with the other cheaper hat with a smaller brim and no warranties. After all, the warranties and performance claims sounded too good to be true (now I know for a fact that they aren't), and I didn't have extra money to throw around. Finally I decided to go on a leap of faith that maybe there are still honest companies out there who do make truthful claims about the high quality of their items and back up their warranty claims without hidden fees and small font boilerplate loopholes. And I wanted the widest-brimmed hat I could find.
It was one of my best purchases ever, and worth every penny. I wore that hat on all my hikes, summited Mt. Whitney, hiked to Machupicchu, and brought it all around the world with me.
Here are some of my favorite features: Due to the strap that goes under the chin and the wind cord that cradles the back of the head, it has never blown off, even in high winds whether the wind comes from the front, sides or the back. The fabric is water resistant and under that wide brim, my head and upper torso stays pretty dry when caught in unexpected rains and snow. The UPF 50+ sun protection and green fabric under the brim protects my skin well from all the elements, not just the sun. There's a Velcro strap and hidden pocket inside the hat that holds small items, and although I've never had to use it, the foam insert at the top of the hat keeps the hat afloat in case it ever falls in the water, which gives me peace of mind when I'm waterskiing. The chin strap and wind chord keep the hat in place even when I'm waterskiing at 25 MPH. Some of my hiking friends used to make fun of me for extolling the virtues of the hat but after coming across several other satisfied Tilley hat owners who echo my sentiments, they're starting to understand that it's not just hype.
Sadly, after 8 years of faithful service and countless times in the washing machine (I machine wash by itself and always hang to air dry), I started to see a small hole in my hat. I kept wearing it for as long as I could (another year) until the hole got noticeably bigger. Finally I had to send my trusty hat in for a replacement. I missed it starting 2 days later and for the next couple of weeks because I needed to use it for all of my activities. I even use it to block the sun when I drive long distance.
After I sent it in with a check for $7.50, my family expressed doubt I would see a replacement hat. Knowing another hiking friend had his Tilley hat replaced after 16 years, I knew Tilley would honor their word. My faith was rewarded when I finally received my Tilley hat in the mail today. Yea!!! My family was astounded by the great service and integrity of the Tilley company when I showed them the replacement hat.
The hat paid itself off during the 9 years I wore it, even before the replacement. The replacement hat is just a bonus. I have had nothing but positive experience with the hat and with Tilley customer service, and will continue to rave about what a good investment and great company it is. I am also going to branch out and buy other Tilley items.
The only downside is that Tilley has in the last few weeks decided to discontinue the T2 model and have not replaced it with a hat of the same brim width, which is very disappointing. Please bring back T2 or replace it with another hat with the same brim width or wider! It really was the perfect hat.
One last note: a shout out to the hat replacement center - thank you for your courtesy, patience, and genuine willingness to provide the best customer service you could. It seems good customer service has been left by the wayside in this day and age, and it's nice when one comes across it. Thank you.

Great sun hatNov 22, 2011
By Leslie The wide brim gives a lot of protection and the dark underside prevents light reflection back onto your face. As a person with a larger than avg head circumference, I really appreciate being able to order by size. It fits perfectly. And it's stylish!
